If it's a US device it's possibly coded to only update from the US website.

because it's a US device, fairly standard in my experience, hardware is "regional" with some manufacturers, it helps keep the price points under their control.

But someone buying this in the US and then coming to the UK or Europe for a holiday must surely be able to get European maps for it to allow it to work here???

You'd think so wouldn't you.
Have you tried this garmin plugin, https://my.garmin.com/maps/chooseDeviceType.htm? select automotive, it might detect your model and let you know about maps.

| Anyone ever ordered off Dell? My Mum ordered a laptop last week, paid by finance, and the order was accepted last Tuesday. The online status of the order still says 'Order processing - waiting for order payment to be finalised'.
Customer services say they cannot get the order up on their system until this stage is complete so cannot offer her any advice. The finance company say they accepted the application the morning after she made it and gave their approval to Dell.
Is this normal? I remember back in the day when i used to order Mesh computers whenever Championship Manager added new system requirements and the long lead times on their orders, but I'd assumed things were a little better customer service wise now that retail stores have muscled in on the market?

| Order from Dell all the time, sometimes you get problems, but they've always delivered. Sounds like they're being slow with the finance (Dell, not the finance company) or (as has happened before) they haven't updated the order status and the reality is the laptop is slowly being prepared/delivered.
Next time go to Novatech.

| My laptop battery has died after 2 years and looking for replacement. Laptop is dell inspiron 1545, part number GW240. Prices on dell website look dear (£100+), and have found plenty of cheaper options from £30ish on eBay/amazon/play.
Has anyone any experience of buying batteries for this type of laptop? Worried if I go really cheap it will damage laptop, but don't want to pay price for dell branded battery..

Go for a mid priced battery on eBay from a seller with good feedback.

How difficult is it to change the battery? My battery, on a similar/same Dell, has been broken for over a year now. Mine is stuck on 0%, so have to run off mains all the time.
However, my aforementioned Dell appears to be dying on me. I'm fairly sure the HD is failing on me. I've managed to get it on, but I'm not convinced its going to last much longer. Is there anything I can do to keep it alive? The Windows is pre installed, so no disk...

Laptop batteries can just be popped out of the bottom of the case usually I think. Nothing more labour intensive than one or two screws.
