Quote: Roddy B "I'm tending to agree, I will get both PES and Fifa. Fifa for playing with my mates, PES for playing by myself offline. The more I've played PES, the better it's got, you learn more things, more ways to play passes, different crosses, different ways to attack crosses (diving headers, bicycle kicks, chest volleys, half volleys, etc.), it's class. I'm looking forward to getting my head around the defending. I've defended pretty much the same way on Fifa since the PS2 days (successfully, too), just jockey and hold circle to get the CPU to close down, when their player sprints, take it off him, simple. On PES, I've not been able to do this, so I've spent a lot of time chasing shadows, but I've also had some class moments, last gasp interceptions etc. it's been fun.

I actually hope Fifa's really good this year (obviously because I'm buying it) but so I can have a really good go at Ultimate Team. The Ultimate Team aspect is class and brings a proper fantasy footy feel to the game, I just got bored of the annoying game play.

I was looking at the PES menu the other day and was wondering what they Champions Leaague thing's about? Surely it's not just the Champions League? It would be fun I guess, but I hope it's integrated into some sort offline manager/career mode thing. (Is it still the Master League?)'"

Last year the Champions League mode was just that but it lasts a while and has everything thats official about the tournament, same for the Copa Libertadores too. Master League added an online feature too which was quality!

The couple of reviews I've seen gave it a 7 and an 8 but Edge mag gave it 3/10. I don't usually take notice of reviews though cos if I enjoy a game I'll play it, just very rare I spend 40 quid on one. Will see how I feel Friday!

The lack of game modes offline is the main thing putting me off going near Pro Evo. On FIFA I spend loads of time playing manager mode (Even though it's been buggy in recent releases) and Ultimate Team. Both are said to be much improved this time around. That's without going near all the team and be a pro stuff. They have also added Football Club, which is supposidly just as addictive as Ultimate Team.

In Pro Evo you get disaster league. It really has been horrific on previous versions. It's like football for non football fans, take away all the licences and the 'rightness' that years of playing Football Manager and FIFA has ingrained into me as necessary and it just feels so hollow and fake. You could argue Ultimate Team is the same, but that's wrapped up so nicely with the card system and the online mode. Have they improved the manager/career mode on Pro Evo this time?

What is the online like on Pro Evo?

12 days until Gears of War is released.

I don't know about everyone else, but I prefer the PES game speed at +2. The more I play this demo the better it gets, finally some competition again. The problem for Konami is that the reputation of Pro Evo has been damaged almost beyond repair in recent years for it to be as successful as it once was.

Licenses are and always have been the problem. Most FIFA buyers don't care about the technical specifics we discuss on here. They just want Stracualursi scoring in an Everton shirt, Messi's boots to be right, Dirk Kuyt to be terrible etc. They want their team and their league recreated fully. Am I right in saying teams like Arsenal and Everton still aren't on Pro Evo 2012 and that the Premier League and FA cup aren't either?

I can't wait to see what FIFA is like this year. All the criticisms of the defending and the dribbling are claimed to have been rectified, with those who have played it saying it is very different in how you play the game. I've read a few previews that say it feels vastly different and a lot better. But then you look at people playing it on youtube at the games conferences and it looks no different to FIFA 11 at all.

Roll on the 360 demos of both games.

I know what you mean about the people who buy FIFA religiously, but in the PS2 era people who wanted to play the best football game bought pro evo, most of that crowd (myself included) have now converted to FIFA, I think Konami will really struggle to get those customers back. Especially as FIFA just keeps improving. AFAIK most of the Premier League teams are still unlicensed, which is obviously an inconvenience but not terribly important (I think someone has already mentioned the patches that are available) But yeah obviously that will always put some people off, hearing the commentator saying 'Merseyside Blues' or whatever it is, is always a cringe worthy moment!

I don't particularly think FIFA needs to be tinkered with too much and think that this is reflected in the Youtube videos, but I think the AI and little tweaks here and there will make a difference enough to warrant buying the game.

Also I heard that the first PES demo that is out of PSN and PC won't be available for the 360 at all ? I look forward to the FIFA demo, which I think is due out within the next fortnight?

It's a football game, everybody wants to play with their club's new players (even Everton fans) and see how their team look on this year's Fifa; it's like any sport game. EA seem to have the sport market by the balls (with only NBA 2K really being its only competition for sport games they make, right?) so it's not just Fifa that has the following, it's EA. The other problem is, even if people did prefer PES (like me), they'd still buy Fifa because their mates have (like me!). Back in the days of the PS2, everybody (at least who I knew) had a chipped PS2 and got their games for nearly nothing, so getting the new PES and bashing that was a small choice back then, but now, with the emergence of online play, more and more 'franchises' are controlling the yearly markets. In shooters, COD dominates; in sport, Fifa and Madden dominate; are there any more game types these days? I joke, of course, but the days of something a bit different really taking over seem gone, people are too scared to try a new game these days, as they spend so hard getting good at one game (online play forces this) they don't want to start all over again online. Of course, there are exceptions and some types of games will always do quite well if they're marketed right or they have the rich history in the franchise (GTA, Gears, Halo etc.) but these games (Fifa, COD) are unrivaled, even if others do seem to be superior.

To answer a few questions from above:

PES Master League is awesome, has always been awesome, and will continue to be awesome for as long as PES is around. Nothing wrong with the past few iterations whatsoever, in my opinion.

Licences are still an issue, in that the original game doesn't have a full set, but thankfully there are diehard fans out there who will get an up to date option file on the net for you to install literally within days of the game releasing, in which every single team, player, kit, stadium etc is spot on.
Konami then release squad updates where necessary. So the licencing thing is a non issue really.

Unfortunately, trying to play PES online is one of the most frustrating activities you will ever come across; it's THAT bad. This is its ultimate downfall and probably the main reason for me leaning towards a FIFA purchase rather than a PES one this time around. For whatever reason, Konami just can't get online to work properly, and games are ruined by dodgy connections, input delays and lag spikes. You can forget about 11v11, the game can't even handle 2v2.
