| Quote Dally="Dally"Just shows how out of touch so many are on here. The vast majority (80%) of the public love her majesty. The monarchy is currently at a high in popularity.
For Charlie, Jack, etc - here's an offer you can't refuse - come and work for us on the bank holiday (for free).'"
Where do you get 80% from? I, nor anyone I know, has ever been surveyed as to our feelings of the Royal family. Just another load of media hype that has swayed the sheep-like public.
As for attracting tourism, ballacks. People come to London, just as they go to Berlin, Paris, Madrid, Moscow or any other major city for the entertaintainment, culture, history and architecture, nothing whatsoever to do with Royalty.
I will gladly work all weekend. Hope it pours down on the sheep who will spend hours stood on a street just to watch her car go bye.

At a guess, I'd say it was a survey in the Dally Wail. They were going to repeat it in the Morning Star but thought better of it

| Getting rid of the monarchy is a red herring, there are far more urgent matters to deal with like ridding the second chamber of hereditary peers and bishops.

The above link shows that 80% of brits polled would favour a monarchy in a referendum. It would however be an incredible leap to infer that because 80% prefer a monarchy that 80% of brits "love the queen" as Dally stated in his post.
I also have no idea if polls from other organisations show similar results or not.

| I'm surprised people still take notice of opinion polls.
Taking the monarchy, 80% of Chipping Norton proberley would keep them, whereas, 80% of Toxteth proberley would'nt.
Anyway, time to root out a certain Smiths LP

| Quote Sadfish="Sadfish"I've mixed feelings, the country wouldn't anywhere near as important as it is without having such a hugely famous monarchy, nor would London be such a tourist trap because of them, you only have to walk down Pall Mall or go to Windsor to see the amount of people passing through all year round, and whilst there are many buildings that would still be there even without them people wouldnt come in the droves they do.'"
I'm far from sure the tourist trap argument is true. As Mark Steel once said, "Do people get to the top of the Eiffel Tower and say 'Well, it's a lovely view but the lack of a functioning monarchy spoils it for me.'?"

I'd guess it'd be more likely be the other way round (proberley).

| I see no reason to celebrate a 60 year reign by a monarch who doesn't have a clue of the hardships of the people of this country and still gets paid by the taxpayer. They are nothing like us. It must be nice for them to look down upon us and not have to want for nothing ever. The sooner the monarchy is abolished the better as it has no place in the 21st Century.

Why would you conclude she has no clue? I'd bet a lot she is very clued up.
And the point about her still being paid by the taxpayer is surely inverted logic; she's 86 and yet still doing a full-time job, faultlessly, without complaint. And no doubt won't stop until either her health fails or she pops her clogs.
