'when my life is over, the thing which will have given me greatest pride is that I was first to plunge into the sea, swimming freely underwater without any connection to the terrestrial world'
Yves Le Prieur, the real inventor of the aqualung: |
|
| Quote: Mintball "Augusto Pinochet was 91 when he died. Would it have been unacceptable to remember with sympathy those whose lives he had blighted while at the same time condemning 'a 91-year-old pensioner'?'"
Evil is evil, no matter what age they die at, Pinochet was in that category and I think anyone remembering him with fondness is probably in the same mould. Oh, wait a minute Thatcher was a massive admirer of him wasn't she.

I wasn't comparing on that level.
Although you might wish to recall that they were friends.
I was using a slightly more extreme case to challenge what seemed to be an all-encompassing statement that, simply by virtue of longevity, one should not condemn someone/if one does condemn them, then everyone else of the same longevity is fair game, even their victims.
The point is that your rationale is, IMO, flawed. Nobody becomes immune to criticism for the actions of their life just because they've died at an old age. That is nothing other than sentimentality.

Yes, she gave him sanctuary and was a big admirer of him, which goes a long way to show what she really thought of the common man and human rights. She also helped prop up apartheid for a long time with her opposition to sanctions.

| I detest Blair and what he has done, also has blood on his hands and helped prop up a regime, but when he dies i'll politely decline to comment, i think that's a classier approach.

| Just been down to Thatcher's grave. Looks beautiful, although I'm a bit concerned that the dancefloor isn't big enough.

Should start the party with 'Highway to Hell'

| I’ve waited so long for this day, but as the years have gone on I’ve always raised a little smile hearing of her strokes & her falls.
But at least the de-regulation of the banks left her with a fitting legacy, as for her sell-off of the family jewels – don’t get me started.
Hey ho, the beers are on ice, the savouries in the oven.
It’s party time .

Is this in your role as devil's advocate or genuine

| It seems rather odd to have 'waited a long time for this day' if you hated her so much surely you would have wanted her to carry on living in a state of dimentia which is a pretty horrific way to live.
She is at rest now surely that's worse for people like you?

Yeah, one of them funded an attempted coup in an oil rich African state for his own personal wealth benefits. Something rubbed off the old cow.

According to his old chum Baroness Thatcher probably yes.
That said she was great in Mamma Mia so it's a bit uncalled for some of the comments on here.
