Its took me a while to read this thread but I thought I would just post before the thread was closed.
I feel I have to contribute as I am born and bred in Goldthorpe. My father and mother were both on strike for 12 months (dad worked in lamproom and mother worked in colliery offices at Hickleton pit).

Although I wasnt in the procession through the village the other day I do understand why some people felt that they had to do it. As JerryChicken has said you cannot compare Goldthorpe to Beverly Hills! The pit closure in Goldthorpe was the start of the towns decline and then the decision to start moving families in from miles away (I dont know the politics behind this) has led to Goldthorpe now being worse than I have ever known it in my 40 years.

Personally I think that people had been waiting for Thatcher to pass away before they could have their protest and make their voice heard about what has happened to mining villages throughout the country since 84.

The story of the strike and the story of my family has led to my cousin writing a book about it. The Valley by Richard Benson comes out later this year and if anyone wants to know why the 84 strike was particularly hard for my parents all they need to do is read this.

The world is littered with mining townd that have breen abandoned. That is a fact of life in extractive industries. Times change and people need to move on. Same goes for lots of other industries.

This thread concerns the legacy of a woman who led a party and a government which embarked upon a series of pre-meditated, sustained, vicious, ideologically-driven attacks upon our kids, our parents, our grandparents, our part of the country, our industries, our communities and our way-of-life, destroying along the way any vestige of justice, fair play and the concept of "aren't our policemen wonderful"?

And you think we should confine ourselves to stiff-upper-lip, turn-the-other-cheek, don't-speak-ill-of-the-dead type of comments that fit nicely within your sensibilities?

That's your view and you are entitled to it.



You can do what you want. Just be minded of how it may make others perceive you.

I don't understand the rationale behind actively celebrating anyone's death, in the spiteful type manner that some have done in recent days. And no-one is yet to provide me with an explanation that does not make them, the person celebrating, look like a complete ass.

No its regarded as an official security procedure. You will see it at the London Marathon this weekend. Even the plods, if not yourself, have worked out the threat for bombers and subversives is likely to come from the crowd rather than the invited guests!
