In fact, I was so inspired by this post that I spoke to Tescos and (you won't believe this) apparently, the price I pay them for a can of beans is MORE than they buy them for.

Is this practice widespread?

I phoned a couple of specialists and reclamation yards earlier this week. Prices were anywhere between £50 - £65 per 1m2. But talking to them a lot of the price is determined by the quality of the face of the stone, and the character it's developed over the years.

What I did find interesting and relevant to my stones. Are the fact that some salvage yards sell stone flags which have been cut through the middle, creating two usable aged faces from one stone. And with most of my flags being 8"" thick or above it's something they may well do with my flags, effectively doubling the square meterage I'll be selling them.

I'm probably going to have to take the plunge and and phone round and get them to come and take a look. I'll just have to be on high alert that they don't all suddenly disappear the next day/s, once people know where they are.

I must drive past that quarry at least two or three times a week.

It's because of the thickness and the fact that they may split them, that's making me umm and arr over what the best way to go about it is.

Stick one in your car. Take to the quarry and show him.

Yeah I think I will do. I've so far destroyed two sack wheels, a wheel barrow and very nearly done my back in lifting all these flags up. I might as well finish the job and really do my back in by wrestling one into the car. One of them is broken so that'll be the one I take.

As for the rest, they're all roughly four feet by two and half feet and eight inches thick. So they'll be staying at home. We had an old set of weighing scales that I manged to wrestle one of the flags onto, unfortunately it just read void.

I'm guessing they must be approaching four hundred pounds a piece.

How daft do I feel?

I wont be going back there then if they are profiteering in the middle of a crisis i will go somewhere where i can get them for cost price.

I'm in the building trade and sell quite a lot of stone. Usually from demolished walls, outhouses or yards. I get between £20-25 per square meter, depending on the individual size and quality. Thicker ones are worth more but I've never come across 8" thick ones! The price will depend upon whether they are delivered or collected. HTH

you'd need bloody big flagpoles for 8" thick stone flags wouldn't you?
