| Although many countries have some staff shortages as we "wake up from covid", is it a coincidence that, having made it abundantly clear that EU workers are "no longer welcome", the UK has major shortages in many of the sectors where EU workers had been most prevalent.
Social care, driving, abattoir work etc, etc.
Of course there are difficulties for all businesses, as there have been throughout the pandemic but, in the UK, is it a coincidence that with so many EU workers now having "returned home", we are struggling for staff in so many areas and just when will the Government take responsibility for their actions.
Maybe, this IS what Brexit was all about and "we" are getting what "we" voted for but, has this situation been "managed" well or could and should we be doing better.
Let's not even consider the other issues surrounding Brexit, the shortage of workers in particular areas is bad enough.

| Boris does not plan that far ahead, all he was interested in was getting Brexit done. The current problem is that much like our empire days we are used to others doing those jobs that we do not want to do ourselves. It was obvious that those who constantly parroted that those from the EU were taking our jobs had no intention of filling the void left themselves. They didn’t mind banging the U.K. drum providing someone else fills these posts but unfortunately most are in areas that do not appeal to many.
If we look at social care this is a vocation more than a career and therefore cannot be staffed by those who are not interested in this field. I wonder how many would want to go into the abattoir sector or vegetable picking. I regret until such time as you can get if ever the U.K. population to want this type of work the longer the shortages will persist and like always Boris won’t have a clue what to do.

| I think what this shows is business wanted to stay in the EU not for access to the single market it was access to very cheap labour. Whilst ever this source was available there was no desire for UK firms to train and develop their own people.
Hopefully this will concentrate business to invest in its people - the best way to keep people isn't always to pay them more but to provide an environment where by they can grow and develop and add value
Whilst it may be painful in the short term if it wakes business up to a new reality then it must be a good thing.

Support through professional qualifications, opportunity to work in various areas within the business, understanding your skill set and mental profile e.g. Myers Briggs and place you appropriately in the organisation - no point putting an I in face to face sales!! Having visibilty of a career path with timeframes - just for starters

| We've all heard the "immigrants are stealing our jobs" for the last umpteen decades. Just which jobs were they stealing?

I don't think they were stealing jobs what they were doing was suppressing incomes and opportunities as firms didn't need to invest, loads of cheap labour - perhaps if they had - and they had plenty of notice - they wouldn't be in the position they are in.
Did I read somewhere that Germany are 400k short in labour terms?

Quite a few I would imagine, if only on a part time basis to subsidise they're or their partners low income in rural areas.

| They have been trying to recruit local pickers for many years without any success. It is not one of those jobs they consider fits their ambitions plus it is hard work, with early starts and in all weathers.

Seem to think you've mentioned this before in comparison to lorry drivers and white collar workers.
