Not neck but once had manipulation done by a private chiropractor on my lower back and then physio from the NHS on it too - made the bloody thing much worse.

^^THIS^^

I fractured C6 over 30 years ago, playing in an amateur match. I spent 6 months out of the game, 3 months of that I was in a soft collar. I wanted to get back playing again and had a surgeon who gave me the OK, it took me half a dozen games to realise I no longer had the bottle to continue. I had always tackled 'downstairs' but once I got back I started tackling up top and ended up with more lumps and bumps than I'd have over the previous 20 years of playing. I continued to play in the odd charity game until the ex-Leeds and GB doctor, Harvey Standeven, had a quiet word after seeing my X-rays. Stan informed me I had calcification at top and bottom of C6 and it was basically my neck muscles that were keeping my head on my shoulders. Stan told me in no uncertain terms to throw away my shoulder pads & gumshield and stick to reffing.

I've suffered a number of neck-related problems since, things like shoulder pains, numbness in arm and fingers and restricted mobility and pains in the neck. Usually this can be resolved by reverting to simply sleeping in a soft collar, I use an orthopaedic pillow and when on a long-haul flight, always wear one of those inflatable support pillows. Occasionally I've been referred to physio, including traction, this involved being strapped into a chair with a harness on my head. The harness was linked to a cable and through pulleys to weights, the weights were gradually increased on each session. The traction lasted around 30 minutes per session and although uncomfortable and boring wasn't painful. Any manipulation of the upper vertebrae should be gentle and controlled.

I'd never let any quack chiropracter anywhere near my neck

I had a lot of problems after I got kneed in the bottom of my neck playing football. I went through various treatments for the best part of a year, which did nothing bar at best easing it temporarily.

The best solution for me was letting my 2 year old walk up and down my back when I lay on my front.

I see everyone is missing the obvious recommendation about how Dally's neck could best be manipulated, well done folks....

I had assumed that it was Mrs Dally who is suffering from a real pain in the neck ... but I would never say something like that, oh no.

I honestly don't believe there's a Mrs Dally, "he" is full of it.

I had my first session yesterday. The guy is a registered physio. I am a bit concerned after some of the comments above and the article linked to. I am also concerned because a few years ago Mrs D had a chiropracter mess about with her neck on the GPs recommendation. As nothing improved I told her to go to a Harley Street specialist to have a second opinion. He said she should never been sent to have people mess about with her neck and could have been paraylsed from the neck down! I mentioned this to the GP when she suggested the treatment - she just said whoever does it should be able to advise!

If there is no struggle, there is no progress. Those who profess to favor freedom, and yet depreciate agitation, are men who want crops without plowing up the ground. They want rain without thunder and lightning. They want the ocean without the awful roar of its many waters. This struggle may be a moral one; or it may be a physical one; or it may be both moral and physical; but it must be a struggle. Frederick Douglas:d7dc4b20b2c2dd7b76ac6eac29d5604e_30596.jpg

Yes, I've got pins and needles in my arm, hand and fingers. Pain in the upper arm and shoulder that varies from mild to excruciating. The manipulation was a sharp push to each side - which did not hurt but sounded as though my neck was being broken. Traction lying down with harness under the chin. Neck has some improvement in movement already although stiff and maybe more painful than before. Hard to tell. Mrs D's research suggested there are better treatments with less risk. I am due to go again next week. Not sure how long to continue. Was expecting loads of people on here would have had treatments for rugby injuries and could offer their experience.

If I read you right, are you saying the physio was not that helpful?

Thanks. Yes, the traction seems OK on the face of it. It's the other procedures I am a bit worried about.

Don't force anything, if you've been given exercises to do then do them regularly and without pushing yourself too hard. The answer lies in your mobility not manipulation
