Because we have a free press and access to news from around the world. In Russia you can only get the news provided by the government unless you can get access to the internet. Putin has blocked a lot of it though.

They’ve literally closed down every independent paper, radio and tv station. Then today the Russian duma (government) have passed a law making it an offence to criticise the Russian military or operations involving them. Punishable by up to 15 years in prison.

After watching that crap Putin came out with today it’s clear he’s going to take over the whole of Ukraine. Every reason he’s come up with is total garbage.

It’ll get worse before it gets better but I’m sure this is the undoing of Putin. The Ukrainians aren’t going to lie down they’ll keep fighting and the Russians will have to spend resources and blood to control it. That coupled with the sanctions I can’t see it being long before the oligarchs and military get sick of Putin and Medvedev and eliminate them.

One country has invaded another and is bombing civilians and besieging cities.
Anyone who puts the blame for that on anyone other than the person or people doing the invading or launching the missiles or surrounding those cities is deceiving themselves or seeking to deceive others.

Ukraine gave up their nukes along with Kazakhstan and Belarus in the 1990s after they signed the Budapest memorandum along with the US, UK, and Russia, in return for the other nations respecting their borders... guess which country broke the agreement.
The Eastern European countries that joined NATO chose to do so themselves, and were free to do so in line with the Helsinki accord, which the SU also signed in the 70s. There was never any agreement made with Russia that guaranteed NATO wouldn't expand. Those countries joined NATO peacefully. What did Russia do when Hungary wanted out of the Warsaw pact?
