On Saturday the 30th of May 2009 the Rochdale Swarm are hosting an International Mixed Tag Rugby League Festival.
Teams are coming over from Ireland along side a Fijian side drawn from the local Fijian Association, The Celtic Crusaders supporters Tag Rugby League side the Celtic Barbarians are also down to play and we hope to get a side from the South Asia Bulls involved as well.
From England along with the Swarm, Oldham and Coventry are already signed up to play.
The rules are 7-a-side of which at least 2 must be of the opposite sex i.e. 5 men 2 women or 3 men 4 women etc. Maximum squad size is 12. (but teams can enter more than one side). Players must be 16+ to participate
There is no contact allowed, a tackle is made by removing a "Tag" from the waist of an attacker. Other than that the rules are very similar to normal rugby and the ball can be kicked but not above head height.
The event is very much a social affair with the emphasis very much on fun and participation. At the festival there will be entertainment all day and after the tournament and presentation itself there will be a band and a disco. To add to the festival feel teams will able to camp at the venue on both Friday night and Saturday night after the event, there will also be a welcome party for the teams arriving on the Friday (the Irish sides are down to arrive Friday night).
The standard is aimed very much at the social player and we aim to attract new people to the game or those who have stopped playing competitive sport, along side those who just want to try something different.
Cost is £60 per team or you can enter as individuals(£5) and be placed in a team.
Price includes entry into the event, a camping pitch and post match refreshments.

Excellent news, also one of our players is looking to enter a team from his work place -gyrointernational- so things are looking good.

We aim to make the day and night as fun and entertaining as possible but appreciate not everyone will be able to stay, but we hope as many as possible will.
As for the cost our major outlay is for extra shower and toilet facilities, entertainment and catering. The ability to camp came with the venue choice so it doesn't affect our cost, so unfortunately the price stays the same whether teams or individuals stay or not. But for only £5 per head it is superb value anyway.
Hope to see you there for what promises to be a fantastic event!!
p.s. It looks like a side from Huddersfield Giants Touch Rugby and NewMiln Community Group are entering and we`ve had a good response from the Wakefield City Webcats.

| At the Festival we will be recommending the use of "Tag Shorts".
The shorts are like the usual Rugby ones apart from they have Velcro stitched into the hip area.
The benefits are
A, They are safer to use, no risk of fingers getting caught up in belts.
B, They make sure Tags are placed in the correct area and will not work out of position when running.
No shorts with pockets or belts with buckles will be allowed.
One innovation we will be using is that the Referee will give each side a set of 7 matching tags at the start of each game. This means each side will be on a fair and even footing.

| Just A Quick Note
Leigh
Hull FC Irregulars
Rovers
Will not be attending the touch festival this year.
Im sure you have enough teams though so no worries.
Just wanted to give you plenty of notice.
Ill find out if any others want to attend.
There might be a couple of junior school sides avalible. There was a small competition in hull only recently ill get in touch with them for you.
If all them turn up should be a good day out.
Regards
Chris

| Quote: Coach "Just Seen that it has to be 16+ Why is that if as you say the event
is a "social affair with the emphasis very much on fun and participation"
I wont ask the 2 junior school teams now seems very strange when its no contact at all.
What about the fev team?? They had a couple that where under 16, i think they now play for wakey seems unfair they wont be able to play.
???'"
Sorry the Irregs cant make this years festival but as you can see we are more than happy with the numbers.
As for the 16+ minimum age limit we consulted with the RFL prior to announcing the event and because of child welfare issues, the appointment of Child Welfare officers, segregation of dressing rooms, CRB checks, parental consent requirements etc it was decided to have a minimum age.
But as you can see it has had no detrimental effect of enquiry numbers and from what we can gather it looks like being the biggest UK Tag Rugby League festival ever, which I`m sure you would agree is a great achievement.
Also today we had an enquiry from Oxford.
